January Extraps Don't Look Good For Stern Subs
While the numbers were also affected by ARBITRON's new Spanish language household measurement methodology, the extrapolated monthly ratings for HOWARD STERN's replacements in NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, and CHICAGO were bad news for CBS RADIO.
At WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK, DAVID LEE ROTH's extrapolated 1.8 share and 63,000 cume 12+ for JANUARY paled against STERN's DECEMBER 7.9 share and 277,000 cume (ROTH pulled a 3.4 in 25-54 and 2.7 in Men 18+, both well behind STERN, and fell 13.8 to 1.3 in 18-34). ROTH surprised listeners and industry observers by taking a vacation in just his eighth week on the job, with middayers JV AND ELVIS taking his slot in NEW YORK, afternooner KIDD CHRIS filling in at WYSP (94.1 FREE FM WYSP)/PHILADELPHIA, and several former local radio personalities taking one day each this week at WNCX/CLEVELAND.
But ROTH looked better compared to ADAM CAROLLA, who went from STERN's 12+ 3.0 in DECEMBER to a 0.7 for JANUARY at KLSX (97.1 FREE FM)/LOS ANGELES, and ROVER, who took STERN's DECEMBER 2.7 and dropped it to a 0.4 in JANUARY at CHICAGO's WCKG (105.9 FREE FM) (2.5 to 0.3 18-34, 4.6 to 0.2 25-54).
The change in methodology, in which ARBITRON changed its screening process for Hispanic households, went into effect in JANUARY.

Large Scale Staff Reduction At Clear Channel/Los Angeles
Last FRIDAY (2/24) was a difficult day for CLEAR CHANNEL/LOS ANGELES as 14 staffers, many veterans among them, in accounting, production, promotions, sales and other departments were told they no longer had jobs.
In a staff memo, CC RVP GREG ASHLOCK wrote: "As I'm sure some of you have heard, it was a difficult day here as we had to let go of some very talented, good people. The staff reduction was simply a matter of operating in a more efficient manner after consolidation. When we brought all the stations together a couple of years ago, we never really made the changes necessary to perform in a more streamlined fashion. Unfortunately, we had to move forward with some difficult decisions today to accomplish this."

Air America Response To Funding Reports: We're "Stronger Than Ever"
AIR AMERICA RADIO has responded to last week's reports by the RADIO EQUALIZER blog, featured on BILL O'REILLY's FOX NEWS CHANNEL show, that the network is receiving up to $8 million in financing from the DEMOCRACY ALLIANCE to keep it on the air, with the network's President GARY KRANTZ issuing a statement asserting that "financially, AIR AMERICA is significantly stronger than ever. As of today, our have booked and pending business for 2006 represents 83% of the entire revenue generated in 2005. We are also up to date on all of our financial obligations. Most importantly, we have a dedicated board and investors who support our business."
KRANTZ also takes shots at O'REILLY for "bad mouthing AIR AMERICA and saying it is failing for two years. It was not true before and it is not true now," adding that AL FRANKEN and RANDI RHODES beat O'REILLY in the NEW YORK ratings for adults 12+ and 25-54. The statement does not include any specifics regarding revenue figures and does not specifically address the RADIO EQUALIZER report about DEMOCRACY ALLIANCE funding but says "there is no substance whatsoever to Mr. O'REILLY's absurd claims of 'gloom and doom.'"

(Don's take-By the way 'TLK posted an UP book in the last ratings, continuting to outperform the format that was in place a year ago when they took over)
Marc Maron Returns To Air America Radio
AIR AMERICA RADIO has announced that comedian MARC MARON -- former co-host of "MORNING SEDITION -- will return to the network on FEBRUARY 28, at 10p (PT) when it debuts "THE MARC MARON SHOW." "We are thrilled to be the flagship station for MARC MARON's new show on AIR AMERICA," said KTLK Station Manager JOHN QUINLAN. "Many of our listeners have been asking when MARC will be back on the air and we are happy tell them that it will be next week."
"We're going to be drawing talent from my friends in the comedy and sketch community out here in LA to create new characters, bits and insanity," said MARON. "We've got great weekly guests lined up. I've got new issues, the world has new issues, and we're ready to go. We think it will be the funniest, most informative, late night radio show on the air."
